Final Proposal

I wanted my exhibition to have a theme of time. I really enjoyed working with the video and creating a sort of time lapse. I was also inspired by the show “Time Warp”, when they test, destroy and/or create different things at very slow speeds. I might take a different approach with a similar idea with my “man with a camera” project. I haven’t found all of my artists yet, but I found a few photographers that might be able to fit in to the exhibition. I even think my artist from my artist presentation might be able to fit in as well.
I just want to try and get a bunch of different videos and other types of works that contrast in time. I would like to find some in slow motion, some sped up, maybe a long time lapse, etc. I think it would be very interesting if I’m able to find a bunch of contrasting works that all have the idea of time taken into consideration.

I did post this a week late, and since then I have found my artists. The artists Blu, Ryan Matthew Smith, Martin Waugh and Tom Guilmette will be in my show because they all do work having to do with events occurring with time in mind. I’m not sure about the work from a classmate I am going to use, but I think I might use Leurin’s man with a camera project, still not 100%.

Technological Reproducibility

Section III

This section spoke of how humans themselves had to advance their ideas and perception about art for it to advance. This also enabled people to be more conceptual rather than sticking by the older, more formal guidelines of interpreting art. This heightened sense of perception rids the “sameness” in the world of art because artists are able to go in any direction they want, as long as they know what they want to do.

The part of this article about the auras was kind of confusing but upon reading the next section I learned that they considered the aura of an artwork or object is it’s “uniqueness”.

Section IV

This section is about how over long periods of time, works of art lose their embeddedness. This means that objects or art is no longer connected to the original meaning, whether it is religious or something else, and it is just considered to be a piece of art. Individuals can have their own opinion on an object, but in the end it is a work of art no matter which way you look at it. The reading gives an example of a statue that was created with religious intent, not as a work of art. Since the religion has long faded, we are left to look at this object as a historical work of art.

Midterm in progress

I wanted to do a sound walkthrough of the music studio I work at. It’s located in the Bronx and it’s kind of in the middle of nowhere. We don’t advertise much for it, but we offer monthly rooms for bands that need a place to practice. Bands have 24 hour access to their room and can play/practice whenever they want. It’s a really interesting place with a diverse group of people that all try to contribute to keep the place going. I plan on either interviewing one of the owners or having him speak on behalf of the studio. In the background I wanted to put some music from some bands in the studio as well as sounds that can usually be heard there.

10 minutes of hockey

On Saturday night I went to play hockey with some friends and I thought this would be a great place to record some sounds. There wasn’t a great variation of different sounds, but I personally enjoy the sound of ice skates scraping the ice. The difference between the gentle gliding along the ice and the hard stopping was interesting. Above that the hockey sticks can be heard slapping the puck and banging against the ice. Anything the sticks hit made kind of a snapping noise. Also the players on the ice were calling to each other, but with all of the other sounds whatever they were saying couldn’t be heard too well. Like I said, there wasn’t too much variation in sounds, but the mixture of everything was very interesting because all of the sounds were all different yet distinctive. Hearing friends fall down and laugh added a lighter mood to the physical sport of hockey.

I’ve played hockey a few times before, but I never sat down and listened to everything together. As the night progressed, I noticed how the ice made different sounds as it wore down more and more.

Sing

I had a bunch of fun messing around with Audacity although it was kind of confusing at the start. I didn’t get to complete a full song but I used music from The Moonlight Sonata and the speech is from a poem from Ezra Pound called Ancient Music.

Sing, Goddamn
