Introduction — artist names, title, how the artists work, the main theme (kind of like the "thesis statement" or "elevator pitch" for the exhibition).

Context — these works were not made in a vacuum, what else was going on? historical context, both within the art world and outside of it.

Expanding the thesis — talk specifics about the works and how they relate- this is a good place to compare and contrast specific works. Use the works as evidence to support you curatorial mission! Talk about why the works you've included are so great and why viewers should appreciate them.

Aesthetic & Conceptual — Be sure to touch on both of these areas! What is the artistic intent or concept behind the works? How do the works actually look to the audience- what is the aesthetic experience of the viewer?

Create a virtual exhibition around one of the themes we've discussed in class. Such themes might include mapping in art, reproduction/appropriation, Net Art, text in art, social media — pick something that interests you!

You should choose works by at least 6 artists to include in the exhibition. You must include one audio/video work by yourself, and one by a classmate. These can be new work, or one of our previous assignments, but must include both audio and video (original or appropriated). If you include one of your previous assignments, you must revisit and improve upon it. Your final project presentation should take the form of a new page on your class site. The page should include the following:

Exhibition Title & names of artists included in the exhibition (6 artists total: 4 "general" artists, one MM1 classmate, and yourself)

Curator's Statement: A 500(ish) word statement about your intentions in creating the exhibition, what theme or idea it explores, and how each artist's work addresses or informs that theme.

An image, embedded video, audio and/or link for each piece included in the show

A brief description of each work including title, date, medium and 3-4 sentences of additional information about the work. Yes, write about your own work as well!

Final Project Timeline:

May 9th: Exhibition Proposal Due

1-2 paragraphs outlining your intended theme and artists/works to be included

May 16th: Curatorial Workshop

In class workshop, including review of curatorial statement and exhibition design, peer review sessions, wordpress customization, etc

May 23rd: Final presentations

Present your exhibition to the class, explaining your curatorial intentions, the design and layout of the exhibition, and the works you chose to include. This will also include presenting, in full, your own new or reworked final video piece.

If your track is long, you don't have to use the whole track, but your piece should be at least 2-3 minutes long. Upload your finished piece to Vimeo and embed it on your blog. Be prepared to present it for critique next week.

Assignments:

Make at least 30 minutes of footage in the spirit of Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera. The footage you gather this week will be used in your next project. Due in two weeks, this will be a short video set to one of the Cinematic Orchestra tracks that accompanied the Vertov film during our screening. This week, head out into the city and try to approach what you find there the way Vertov did in his film. This can be literal or abstract- you might try to mimic specific shots that struck you, or just try to capture the zeitgeist of your city in 2011. Whatever you decide to do, remember to experiment — this is your opportunity try a range of styles and techniques. Try out different camera angles and shots, lighting conditions, subjects in motion, camera in motion, both! Here are the soundtrack files.

Transfer your footage to Final Cut (create a new project, name your clips, transfer them to Final Cut using the Log & Transfer Window). Detailed instructions here.
If you're having trouble remembering any of the material from the camera demo, check here, or search the internets for "Canon Vixia HF200 manual".

Read the first half of The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. If your assigned section is included this week, write a summary of your section on your blog

INSTRUCTIONS for Freesound Uploads
If you haven't already, join Freesound and SoundCloud. Isolate one audio sample from your ambient field recording or interview materials, and upload it to Freesound (use an uncompressed WAV format). Also upload your final mix of your midterm audio MP3 to SoundCloud. Link to the Freesound page for your submission and embed the SoundCloud player widget on your blog. FYI: It can take a little while for a submission to be approved on Freesound, so if you're not there by next week, no worries.
