For my soundscape project I decided to be the intermediary between the place and the people. And as any tour guide, I made my audience experience the location how I would like it to be perceived. The most honest way to go about that is to give the audience a sense of my internal dialogue as I encounter this location. I aimed at recreating thoughts I was both aware and unaware of at the space, such as counting the number of seats and constantly reminding myself of how hungry I am respectively.

For the WordPress assignment I downloaded the mp3 files and synced them to my iPod. I listened as I walked to the train station and on my train ride to work. I also did some listening during my break and on my way back home. I realized it was very difficult to keep track of what was being said, not only because I was often distracted (avoiding ice on the floor, swiping my metrocard, etc…) but also because of all the different music and sound bits that accompanies the narrator’s voice. I listened to it once more before falling asleep the next day and although it made a bit more sense it was not completely cohesive. I did find the one or two sentences the narrator would say to be interesting and thought-provoking.

There’s no linearity or narrative it’s just an apparently random set of sound samples edited in a manner in which sometimes the sounds coincide or relate and sometimes there’s a “call and respond” technique. For example on side B there’s a recording of a little girl saying “… a mother, a father, two children and an anthropologist” to which the main narrator then responds “What’s the definition of an Eskimo family?”
